Although many differentials look different the layout is common. Below pictures can represent various differentials.

 

On a tandem rear and single drive, the input shaft and pinion gear shaft are one in the same component. Count the splines (notches) around the shaft.

On a tandem front drive, the input shaft and pinion gear shaft are separate components and in different locations. Count the splines (notches) around the input shaft.
